The Commercial Bank of Ethiopia (CBE) has disbursed over 264 billion Birr in loans over the past eight months, with 88.2% allocated to the private sector. President Abe Sano highlighted efforts to expand loan accessibility, including digital loan services in partnership with Ethio Telecom. So far, 3.9 billion Birr in digital loans have been issued to 717,000 customers. The bank is also preparing to support startups and enhance financial inclusion.

The Commercial Bank of Ethiopia (CBE) has disbursed over 264 billion Birr in loans to its customers over the past eight months, according to Abe Sano, the bank's president.

Loan Expansion and Financial Inclusion

Presenting the bank's eight-month performance report to the House of Peoples' Representatives' Standing Committee on Public Enterprises, President Abe Sano emphasized:

  • The bank's efforts to expand loan accessibility and enhance financial inclusion.
  • The introduction of new loan products to facilitate this expansion.
  • 264.65 billion Birr in loans were provided in the last eight months, with 88.2% directed toward the private sector.
  • The total loan disbursement has reached 1.39 trillion Birr.

Digital Loan Services and Partnerships

To broaden loan accessibility, CBE has partnered with Ethio Telecom to provide digital loan options.

  • 3.9 billion Birr in loans were disbursed via digital platforms in the past eight months.
  • 717,000 customers have benefited from digital loans as of February 28, 2025.
  • The bank has completed preparations to enhance digital loan accessibility, with the system currently in the testing phase.

Support for Startups and Entrepreneurs

  • CBE has made preparations to provide loan services to promising startups, further supporting entrepreneurial initiatives.
