Ethiopia's black market rate, and why this site won't quote it
You will not find a parallel market figure on ET-Forex - not a rate, not a range, not an estimate. Here is what the parallel market is, where it stands legally, what changed when the birr floated, and what the banks are actually paying instead.
What people mean by the black market rate
The parallel - or black - market is currency changing hands outside the licensed banking system: cash for cash, privately, at whatever price the two people agree on. It exists wherever demand for foreign currency runs ahead of what the formal system supplies at the official price.
For years that described Ethiopia well. Foreign exchange was rationed: importers waited for allocations, travellers faced limits, and the difference between what a bank would give you and what somebody would pay you privately was, in effect, the price of not queuing. That difference is what people are asking about when they search for the black market rate.
Why there is no figure for it on this site
Every number on ET-Forex has a bank's name attached to it, a timestamp, and a board the bank published itself. That is the entire proposition. A parallel rate has none of those things: no issuer, no publication, no branch that will honour it, and no way for a reader to check it against anything.
Sites do publish figures for it. They are assembled from hearsay, they disagree with each other, and nobody who prints one can tell you where it came from. Putting one here would mean asking you to trust a number on the same page as thirty numbers that can be verified - which would devalue the thirty rather than lend credibility to the one.
Where it stands legally
Foreign exchange in Ethiopia must go through an authorised dealer: the commercial banks and the licensed bureaux the National Bank of Ethiopia supervises. Buying or selling foreign currency outside that channel is an offence.
The practical risk is worth stating separately from the legal one. A private cash trade has no receipt, no recourse on a short count or a counterfeit note, and no counterparty you can go back to. Every bank listed on this site is an authorised dealer, which is the same reason its rate can be printed here with its name against it.
What changed in July 2024
The National Bank of Ethiopia moved to a market-determined exchange rate, ending the managed regime that had held the official rate well away from where the currency was trading privately. The official rate depreciated sharply, and banks began pricing independently rather than tracking a single administered figure.
The reason to seek a parallel deal shrinks as the distance between the two closes, and that distance narrowed considerably. How much of it remains on any given day is not something this site measures, so it is not something this site will tell you. What it can tell you is that the banks now genuinely compete - which is why the spread between them is worth checking.
What Ethiopian banks are paying for dollars today
Published boards, ranked by what each bank pays for US dollar cash. The gap between the best and worst is worth about 5255 birr on a 1,000 dollar exchange - legally, and for nothing more than walking into a different branch.

Black market questions
What is the black market dollar rate in Ethiopia today?
ET-Forex does not publish one. Parallel market rates are not collected, quoted or estimated here, because there is no issuer to attribute them to and no branch that will honour them - a figure like that is a rumour with a decimal point. What this site publishes instead is what every Ethiopian bank has actually posted: on 28 August 2026, the most any of the 30 banks tracked here pays for US dollar cash is 164.88 ETB at Oromia Bank.
Why is the black market rate different from the bank rate?
A parallel market appears wherever demand for foreign currency exceeds what the formal system supplies at the official price. For years Ethiopia rationed foreign exchange: importers queued for allocations, travellers faced limits, and the gap between what a bank would give you and what somebody would pay you privately was the price of skipping the queue. The parallel figure was never a better rate so much as a different market, with no recourse, no receipt and no counterparty you could complain to.
Is it legal to change money on the black market in Ethiopia?
No. Foreign exchange transactions in Ethiopia must go through authorised dealers - the commercial banks and licensed bureaux supervised by the National Bank of Ethiopia. Buying or selling foreign currency outside that channel is an offence, and the risk is not only legal: there is no recourse on a short count, a fake note or a reversed deal. Every bank on this site is an authorised dealer, which is precisely why its rate can be published with its name against it.
Did the 2024 float close the gap?
It narrowed it substantially. In July 2024 the National Bank of Ethiopia moved to a market-determined exchange rate, ending the managed regime that had held the official rate well away from what the currency was trading at privately. The official rate depreciated sharply as a result, and the reason to seek a parallel deal shrank with the distance between the two. ET-Forex does not measure the remaining gap and does not publish a figure for it.
Where can I get the best legal dollar rate in Ethiopia?
At whichever authorised bank is paying most that morning, which changes: the 30 banks tracked here price independently and most reprice every business day. On the current boards the rate paid for a dollar runs from 159.62 to 164.88 ETB - a difference of about 5255 birr on a 1,000 dollar exchange, legally, for choosing the right counter. The table on this page ranks all of them, best first.
